Dictionary.com defines the word ADVOCATE as "(v) to speak or write in favor of; support or urge by argument; recommend publicly; to act as an advocate; (n) a person who speaks or writes in support or defense of a person, cause, etc.; a person who pleads for or in behalf of another; intercessor" (2024).

Why Should We Advocate For Our Students?

Over 76,000 multilingual learners bring rich cultural and linguistic diversity to South Carolina’s public schools. These students have incredible potential—but too often, they face personal, social, and systemic challenges that stand in the way of their success. Many come from immigrant or refugee backgrounds, yet instead of being celebrated for their resilience and strength, they are frequently met with deficit mindsets and social stigma.

Too many schools and teachers lack the resources and support systems needed to ensure that multilingual learners receive the high-quality education they deserve. In recent years, there has been a critical shortage of funding and multilingual teachers. These gaps in resources and representation have real consequences. Without qualified educators and adequate support, many multilingual learners struggle to stay engaged, meet academic milestones, and feel a sense of belonging in school. As they navigate an educational system not fully designed for their success, their opportunities can become increasingly limited, making the transition to higher education even more challenging. Especially for undocumented students, who are excluded from federal financial aid programs.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. Our students are capable, determined, and full of promise—and they deserve better.
